Erector spinae plane block for acute renal colic in the pregnant patient

Published:February 01, 2023DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijoa.2023.103636
Renal colic is a common cause of non-obstetric abdominal pain although rates of hospitalisation vary between 0.03%-0.4% of all pregnancies. In uncomplicated nephrolithiasis, expectant management with hydration and adequate analgesia may be sufficient, but uncontrolled pain can require intervention.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories are contraindicated at some gestations due to potential risks to fetal development, thus limiting analgesic options.
